Baltimore Washington Laborers' District Council Announces District of Columbia Candidate Endorsements

Washington, D.C. (April 25, 2018) —Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), announced its endorsement of eight incumbents seeking re-election in the District of Columbia:

  • -Mayor Muriel Bowser
  • -Council Chairman Phil Mendelson
  • -Attorney General Karl Racine
  • -At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds
  • -Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau
  • -Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh
  • -Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie
  • -Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen

“The District of Columbia has an excellent team of public officials up for re-election this year, and they each have demonstrated that their values align with those of our members,” said David Allison, Business Manager of the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council.

Mayor Muriel Bowser upheld the project labor agreements (PLAs) on the DC United Soccer Stadium and the South Capitol Street Bridge signed by her predecessor. Her administration also executed a PLA on the Wizards’ practice facility. Each of these projects is currently under construction, and they have helped create pathways to the middle class for District residents.

Under the leadership of Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, the Council unanimously passed the Procurement Integrity, Transparency, and Accountability Amendment Act of 2015. The Act requires the Mayor to execute PLAs on city construction projects valued at $75 million or more, unless the Mayor indicates in writing why a PLA is not in the best interest of the District. Councilmembers Bonds, Nadeau, Cheh, McDuffie, and Allen each voted in favor of the Act.

Attorney General Karl Racine has been an outstanding advocate for working people since taking office. During his first term, Attorney General Racine established a standalone Office of Consumer Protection and expanded the Public Advocacy Division to better use the power of the courts to defend the rights of District residents.

“We are pleased to support these eight incumbents who understand the importance of union membership,” commented Allison.
