LIUNA Endorses Josh Shapiro for Pennsylvania Governor

Reston, Va. (August 17, 2022) - The mid-Atlantic Region of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) as well as LIUNA’s district councils in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Vicinity endorsed Josh Shapiro for Governor of Pennsylvania.

LIUNA leaders spoke to Shapiro’s initiatives to support and protect Pennsylvania’s workers in their decision to back his campaign.

One of those initiatives involves holding contractors accountable who are in violation of Pennsylvania’s prevailing wage law. Shapiro has pursued several wage theft cases, including the largest prevailing wage criminal case, which resulted in workers winning back millions of dollars.

“I know that Josh is going to fight for Pennsylvania’s working families as governor because he is already taking on that fight as attorney general,” said Dennis L. Martire, LIUNA Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager. “He will not back down when contractors are taking advantage of Pennsylvania’s workers and their hard-earned wages and benefits.”

Shapiro consistently defends workers’ right to bargain collectively, and he also frequents LIUNA’s training center in Philadelphia. On one of his visits to the training center, he announced his plans to invest in more trade training programs if elected.

“As Attorney General, I have fought for Pennsylvania workers and stood up to attacks on the union way of life – and I will continue that fight every single day as Governor,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “While my opponent and his allies in Harrisburg want to undermine unions and attack the right to organize, I will always have Pennsylvania workers’ backs. I am proud and honored to be endorsed by LIUNA and to have their support in this campaign – and I look forward to continuing to work together and standing with the working men and women they represent.”

“Josh is respected on both sides of the aisle because he is committed to serving the Commonwealth through effective policy, not extreme policy,” continued Martire. “Pennsylvania’s working families need a governor who will work for them, and Josh proves that time after time.”
